When you think of where most radon issues are found, you probably envision an older home in an established neighborhood where this poisonous gas has been discovered. But, radon can be found just about anywhere you live, work, or play. This includes group living – ex: retirement homes, apartment buildings, dorms, and more. Developers aren’t just waiting to test buildings after they’re built. They are being proactive and including radon mitigation systems in their building plans.

A great example can be found at The Landing Senior Apartments in Mount Vernon, Ind. (www.thelandingseniorapts.com) Not only does The Landing offer convenient living with a luxury view of the Ohio River, it also features healthy indoor air quality – thanks to Radon Systems of Indiana. Because this complex was built using the latest green building techniques, the developer installed a passive radon system. This means that piping was installed as a part of the building process – in this case the passive system – a sub-slab ventilation system – was mounted and vented to the roof. After testing, the passive system wasn’t mitigating the radon to acceptable levels, so Radon Systems of Indiana attached fans to the top of the passive system, which greatly reduced the radon levels.
